Exciting Article Feature! Kacey Currie-Yellowbird discusses Samson Cree Nation's Community Freezer Program, an initiative supported by the Ărramăt Project. This program empowers Youth with Traditional hunting skills, supports community health, and contributes to sustainable practices.

Kacey leads young hunters in sustainable hunts for elk, moose, and deer, providing meat for both community sustenance and ceremonial use. The program also involves crucial research into chronic wasting disease, promoting a better understanding of this condition among wildlife.

Yesterday was a standout day for our Team, packed with meaningful moments. It kicked off with Brenda Parlee & Herb Nakimayak's compelling presentation at the Indigenous Research Symposium!

The excitement continued as we celebrated the opening of our new collaborative Ărramăt space at the University of Alberta. We hope this space can be used to welcome any of our global Team members if and when they visit! We are also excited for the space to serve some of the graduate students who are working with our Project. Thank you to everyone who came together to make this day happen!

Pope Francis is challenging governments to "recognize the Indigenous Peoples of the whole world, with their cultures, languages, traditions and spirituality, and to respect their dignity and their rights, in the knowledge that the richness of our great human family consists precisely in its diversity."

This week, we hosted a 2-day mapping workshop in E

This week, we hosted a 2-day mapping workshop in Edmonton, focusing on how to handle the challenges posed by increased shipping in the Arctic. Led by Herb Nakimayak, Inuvialuit leaders, Elders, and Youth, we explored solutions to protect our Arctic ecosystem and the wellbeing of Inuvialuit and Inuit communities.

A big thank you to the Fisheries Joint Management Committee and UAlberta's Hannah Atkinson (MSc Student) for their hard work in organizing this event. We discussed everything from data analysis to governance gaps, making new connections and setting the stage for future action.

This effort was a team achievement, with partners including the Inuvialuit Game Council, the Joint Secretariat, Cambridge Bay HTO, CADEM Lab at NAIT (Dave Blaine), Carleton University (Peter Pulsifer), and UAlberta students. It was supported by the Ărramăt Project and funding from ECCC, Transport Canada, and the governments of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Thanks to everyone involved for their dedication and insight. Together, we're making strides towards a sustainable Arctic future.

We are delighted to announce James Lamouche as our new Executive Director! James is Cree/Métis from kapawe’no (Grouard) on Treaty 8 Territory, and brings to our Team a rich background in Indigenous Knowledge, research, land-based education and community development!

He comes to the Ărramăt Project after serving as the Director of Innovation and Research at the Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom Centre providing educational policy, research, and resource support for the Nations of Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Territories. Previously, he was a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School; Coordinator of the Four Directions Summer Research Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital; a Research Officer with the National Aboriginal Health Organization; Director of Research and Indigenous Health Sciences Coordinator at University nistameyimâkanak Blue Quills; and Associate Director of Indigenous Student Services at McMaster University.

James has a unique background in academic and community research in the areas of Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Medicines. He has extensive experience at the community level as program developer, researcher, and facilitator. He has a strong background in research ethics; multilateral environmental agreements and fora; land-based education; and Indigenous Knowledge. We are very excited for all that he brings to the Project!
