Pathway T4, Supporting Social Justice,Reconciliation and Healing, invites Ărramăt Indigenous communication organizations or individuals to apply for the production of 10 podcasts on Indigenous Research Methodologies.

They're looking for proposals to create engaging podcasts (5-7 minutes each), focusing on topics like biodiversity conservation, health, and social justice. Submissions should include script development, interviews, sound editing, and bilingual subtitles.

📆Application period: Nov 11 - Dec 11, 2024

🌿 Yesterday, our Ărramăt Team had the opportunity to visit the kihcihkaw askî (sacred land) ceremony space in Treaty 6 for our staff meeting! The space was truly incredible, providing a beautiful setting that deepened our connection to the land and each other. It was a meaningful experience, reminding us of the importance of honouring and preserving sacred spaces in our work. Grateful for this chance to gather and reflect together! 🌍✨

🌍✈️ Exciting updates from Mongolia! Ărramăt Nominated Principal Investigator Dr. Brenda Parlee, Senior Research Administrator Dr. Altanzaya Yansanjav, and University of Alberta graduate student Carmen Hamel recently travelled to Mongolia on a field trip! Their journey allowed them to engage directly with local herding families, deepening their understanding of traditional practices and community resilience.

The two projects in Mongolia are "Utilization of Natural Resources for Pasture Conservation with Involvement of Indigenous People of Mongolia," led by Dr. Khodroi Batnaran, and "Understanding Herders’ Perception of Climate Change and its Effects on Biodiversity of their Rangeland through Gender Perspectives," led by Dr. Tumendelger Sengedorj. The chance to meet face-to-face with local herding families and researchers allowed for rich conversations that deepened their understanding of traditional herding practices and community perspectives.

Additionally, Dr. Parlee had the opportunity to present at the Mongolian National University of Education, discussing potential avenues for further collaboration. We look forward to the ongoing partnerships and knowledge sharing that will emerge from this meaningful exchange! 🤝

Ărramăt Co-PI Mariam Wallet Aboubakrine recently visited two Sámi Indigenous-led place-based projects and had the opportunity to engage with the Sámi Parliaments (Sámediggi) in Inari and Kárášjohka. Guided by former parliamentarians and Sámi knowledge holders, Ragnhild Nystad and Irja Seurujärvi-Kari, she explored strategies to mobilize sustainable funding for Indigenous-led research. 🌿

She also visited the Sámi Museum in Karasjok, where Ărramăt Co-Applicant Jelena Porsanger shared how their work focuses on cultural revitalization after nearly 100 years of suppression due to colonization. It was inspiring to witness their dedication to preserving and strengthening their traditions.
We deeply value every opportunity to connect with our global team, as it allows us to share knowledge, learn from one another, and strengthen our collective efforts. These moments of exchange are crucial in advancing our shared goals and supporting Indigenous communities worldwide! 🌎

What can you do to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation?

1) Read books by Indigenous authors;
2) Review the 94 Truth and Reconciliation calls to action and commit to at least one;
3) Watch online events hosted by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation;
4) Identify and connect with your local Indigenous serving organizations;
5) Take part in community events that are going on near you.

Ărramăt Pathway T6, led by Dr. Prasert Trakansuphakon (Pgakenyaw Association for Sustainable Development) and Dr. Prateep Nayak (University of Waterloo), is hosting its first in-person workshop on Sustainable Indigenous Livelihoods and Economies (SILE) this week, in Chiang Mai, Thailand! It’s incredible to have our global team together, sharing insights and experiences face-to-face!

The workshop aims to strengthen collaboration and develop a strategic action plan for future activities. Participants are engaging in experiential learning with field visits to PASD’s project sites. Highlights include exploring the Hin Lad Nai Community’s Forest Gardens, rotational farming, beekeeping, and local governance, and meeting Lee Ayu Chuepa, founder of Akha Arma’s "Living Factory," which empowers Indigenous communities through coffee and local produce. 🌿

Come work with us! Ărramăt Pathway 10 is seeking a full-time Project Coordinator.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly motivated full-time Project Coordinator (PC) to join our Pathway 10 project team. The PC will work directly with the Ărramăt Pathway 10 project team and the Centre for Collaborative Action on Indigenous Health Governance (CCAIHG). The PC will offer research expertise and analytical support related to Pathway 10 activities, which include leading the development of a series of global scoping reviews and publications, providing support to place-based projects, synthesis of information gathered during virtual and in-person regional engagement sessions, coordinating language interpreters (i.e., French, Spanish, and Thai) for global meetings, ensuring the project team meets reporting deadlines and deliverables, and related research tasks.

APPLICATION DETAILS

Status: Full-time (37.5 hours per week) position for a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension. Extended health and dental benefits are not included.
Salary: $63,492/year
Location: Remote work within BC

The successful candidate must be able to start by September 16, 2024.

Exciting Article Feature! Kacey Currie-Yellowbird discusses Samson Cree Nation's Community Freezer Program, an initiative supported by the Ărramăt Project. This program empowers Youth with Traditional hunting skills, supports community health, and contributes to sustainable practices.

Kacey leads young hunters in sustainable hunts for elk, moose, and deer, providing meat for both community sustenance and ceremonial use. The program also involves crucial research into chronic wasting disease, promoting a better understanding of this condition among wildlife.
